It is a less known fact that India is on the edge of becoming the ‘Diabetes Capital of the World’ overtaking China, which earlier had the largest number of diabetics. It is estimated that in the next few decades, we will have more than 100 million diabetics in India. Adding to our worries will be the fact that every fifth person will be diagnosed with diabetes.

A large part of the population in our country is unaware of the most common lifestyle disease and its effects, including poor eye-sight that eventually leads to losing one’s vision. With an aim to educate people, Dr.Nishant Kumar, a distinguished ophthalmologist, is spearheading a campaign called ‘Eyebetes’, to raise awareness about the correlation between diabetes and vision impairment among people. This drive will be conducted from Friday 25th August till Sunday 3rd September 2017at the entrance of the Siddhivinayak Temple in Prabhadevi, where thousands of devotees visit Lord Ganesha to seek his blessings on this festive occasion. For the success of the campaign and its smooth execution as well as the maintainance of the high-end equipment and ensuring maximum eyes are canned at the earliest, Eyebetes foundation has started a crowdfunding campaign on Through this crowdfunding association, Dr.Nishant aims to considerably reduce vision impairment problems among diabetics.

The ‘Eyebetes camp’ will offer worshippers an opportunity to get their sugar checked and their eyes scanned, free of charge. This check-up will also not take too much of their time as it has been organised in such a way that devotees just have to spare 7 minutes of their time. The campaign has already garnered a positive response from the masses and has received a lot of support from renowned celebrities. Cricket legend, Sachin Tendulkar, has also lent support to this initiative by urging people to come forward and get their eyes checked free of cost.

Sachin Tendulkar commented, “Not many people are aware about blindness caused by diabetes. With the help of this free sugar check up and eye-scan drive, Dr.Nishant Kumar and team are doing a really good job. I am sure that many of you will visit Siddhivinayak temple during Ganesh Chaturti this year. I urge everyone to take the time out to get your sugar and eyes checked when you go to visit Lord Ganesh. Dr Nishant and his team will be there to help you with the quick process and also give you tips on how to control diabetes. Early detection could help cure it faster. Do not take your health for granted, your eyes as vision are very precious.”
